It never rains...
Disaster really does have a nasty habit of catching me unawares.
Just when I thought the last few weeks of madness were finally over and I could at long last settle down to weekends spent writing and doing research for my MA, disaster saw fit to sneak up on me (again) and strike a rather hefty blow to my plans.
How so? I hear you ask. Surely after weeks and weeks of torment at the hands of Lulu customer services, there couldn’t possibly be any more difficulties in getting that oh-so-close book publication off the ground?
Well yes, apparently there can. You see last week, my computer died.
Not only has this meant I haven’t been able to access the internet from home, but it also means all my important writing files are currently trapped on a hard drive I have no access to via USB or CD/DVD. This includes my completed manuscripts, my fully formatted book content and copies of my cover illustrations. This also includes my oh-so-precious music collection.
Fortunately I’ve managed to solve the majority of problems caused by my computer’s death with the not-so-subtle solution of buying a cheap new laptop to tide me over. Unfortunately, this still doesn’t solve the issue of how on earth I’m supposed to get the files off my hard drive in the first place. The solution, I am told, is to buy a hard drive hub and attach it to my laptop via USB. Annoyingly, this is going to set me back £30-40 and use up what’s left of my weekend in travel time and inconvenience pissing about fixing things I really don’t want to be messing about with.
I just want to spend my weekends doing writing and research! Is that really so much to ask?
Oh, and some reading too, if I can find the time.
My reading at the moment really is slipping behind. On the last count I’m up to somewhere in the region of 45 books read for the year, which considering last year’s total, really is a rather poor showing on my part.
But what can I do eh? Work and uni have really set my reading back somewhat, and with my writing plans as well, I don’t think I can reasonably expect to meet my ‘minimum’ 52 books in a year next year. If I’m lucky, I might just pull it off this year, but given the books I’m yet to read on my reading pile, this isn’t likely. At present I’m reading Richard Holmes’ The Age of Wonder which is a sort of biography of the end of the 18th century and the important figures that inhabited it. It’s definitely slow going, I can tell you.
Fingers cross next week I might make some more progress with it. Oh, and I REALLY need to do some typing. I say this every blog, but I still have 10k worth of material to type up. Maybe next weekend. Yes, I shall definitely see about making some time for it next weekend. It really does need doing…
Until next time,
M.J.Ryder
